Exploring who you need to become before what you need to do
This past week, I had the privilege of meditating with Buddhist ministers at the WON Dharma Center outside Albany, New York. I was there for a retreat.
Meditating in the morning meant gathering in the meditation hall before the sun rose. We walked there in crisp, cold air, the kind that wakes up your senses. Inside, we sat on the floor on meditation cushions and held silence for about fifty minutes. We closed each practice with chanting and a beautiful song.
I participated in the morning meditation two of the three mornings I was there. It didn’t take long during the first session for me to realize just how distracted our world has become.
How many mornings do we jump out of bed and get right to it? We pick up our phones, check email, scroll Facebook or Instagram. Maybe you prefer reading, so you scroll Substack instead.
At the end of that first meditation, I made a small but intentional choice. I didn’t reach for my phone right away. I let it rest.
In that quiet space, I prayed. I reflected. I thought things through. I even came to a decision.
I wanted more of this energy at home. More of this peaceful way of starting my day.
So since returning, I’ve adjusted my morning routine. Now, I wake up and sit in silence in front of the fireplace for thirty minutes each morning.
During this time, I intentionally bring in the sensations I feel when I’m on purpose. I notice warmth in my chest, calm in my body, and peace in my spirit.
For those few minutes each day, I feel whole.
My Soul’s Agenda is to feel whole and to inspire others to feel the same.
My days are different when I begin this way. I’m more in tune with my body. My mind doesn’t race as much. Anxiety may still show up, but it’s quieter. Muted.
And that makes all the difference.
Spend some time in silence in the next few days and journal from this place.
Reflect and write:
Who do I need to become in order to create the result I want?
What do I need to do to create the result I want?
What do I need to let go of to create the result I want?
Close by writing one sentence that begins with:
“When I am aligned with who I am meant to be, I naturally…”
Let this be a practice of listening, not striving.
An Invitation
On February 7, I’m hosting a workshop where we’ll explore some of your most cherished memories and gently mine your life for your Soul’s Agenda.
This workshop is part of the VIP experience for attendees of the Finding Purpose After Trauma Summit, which I had the honor of speaking at last month. While the summit has ended, you can still purchase the VIP package to access the replays and the exclusive VIP offers from all the speakers.
I would love for you to join me on February 7 at 10am ET as we uncover your Soul’s Agenda—together.
